In the root of my hosting space is a folder called "php_uploads". Can I place the SCRIPT folder contents there or should I leave them all in the root?

You need to install it into the main folder like public_html or htdocs or something like that to get access to the index.php file of the script when you type in your scriptdomain http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php
